HeartCode® BLS – Online & Hands-On Certification

Course Overview

HeartCode® BLS is an innovative, blended-learning course that combines online self-paced learning with in-person skills practice. Using dramatizations, eSimulations, animations, interactive activities, and self-directed modules, HeartCode® BLS teaches healthcare professionals essential BLS knowledge and hands-on skills in a flexible, efficient format.

This course is ideal for both initial and renewal BLS certification and allows students to learn at their own pace while completing a structured hands-on session with an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor.

Course Structure

Part 1 – Online Self-Paced Modules
  • Duration: 30 minutes – 2 hours (depending on experience)
  • Includes 10 interactive modules, 5 eSimulations, and 2 video tutorials
  • eSimulation cases cover:
    • 2 adult two-rescuer BLS scenarios
    • 1 child one-rescuer BLS scenario
    • 1 infant two-rescuer BLS scenario
    • 1 infant one-rescuer BLS scenario
  • Virtual debriefings provided after each eSimulation with links to referenced sections in the BLS Provider Manual
  • Access to downloadable resources: BLS reference card, algorithms, team diagrams, high-quality CPR summary, skills checklist, and Chain of Survival
Part 2 – In-Facility Hands-On Skills Session
  • Duration: 15–30 minutes
  • Conducted with an AHA-certified instructor
  • Focus on meaningful skills practice, team scenarios, debriefing, local protocol discussions, and skills testing
  • Optional use of a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) where available

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of high-quality CPR and its impact on survival
  • Explain all steps of the Chain of Survival and apply BLS concepts
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • Demonstrate proper AED use and understand its early importance
  • Provide effective ventilations using a barrier device
  • Apply team dynamics in multi-rescuer CPR and function effectively as a team member
  • Perform relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

  • 25-question multiple-choice exam to test cognitive knowledge

  • Printable certificate of completion after modules, simulations, exam, and course evaluation are successfully completed

Certification

Upon successful completion of both the online modules and the hands-on skills session, students receive an official BLS Provider Card valid for two years, issued the same day.
