Clinical Skills Requirement

Hands-on training is an essential component of the Phlebotomy Training Program at TLC Medical Training. Students must participate in supervised clinical skills practice in order to develop competency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures.

During laboratory training sessions, students will practice venipuncture techniques under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor. Practice may include performing venipuncture procedures on approved volunteers, which may include fellow students.

All procedures are conducted in a controlled classroom environment and follow proper infection control and safety standards.

Minimum Skills Requirement

To successfully complete the program, students must demonstrate competency in:

  • Venipuncture procedures
  • Capillary punctures (finger sticks)
  • Proper specimen collection and labeling
  • Infection control and safety procedures
  • Patient identification and specimen handling

Students must complete a minimum of:

  • 30 successful venipunctures (not required for refresher course)
  • 10 successful capillary sticks ( not required for refresher course)

These procedures are required for successful completion of the program.

Important Enrollment Requirement

Because hands-on venipuncture practice is required, all students must sign the Phlebotomy Skills Practice Consent Form prior to participating in clinical skills training.

By enrolling in the program, students acknowledge that they may both perform and receive venipuncture procedures during supervised training sessions.

Students who choose not to sign the required consent form acknowledging participation in venipuncture practice will not be permitted to enroll in the phlebotomy training program.

Safety & Supervision

All clinical practice sessions follow:

  • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards
  • Standard infection control precautions
  • Proper sharps disposal procedures
  • Direct instructor supervision

Student safety and patient safety are always the highest priority.
